What a first padel racket actually needs
Three specs decide whether a racket helps or punishes a beginner. Everything else on the box is marketing.

It scores 8.3 overall, and the reason it belongs on a beginner list is what sits underneath that number: forgiveness and comfort well above its price band, with power deliberately traded away.
It is a round, soft-core frame that does the two things a first racket has to do — it does not punish a mishit, and it does not hurt your arm. What it will not do is finish points for you at the net. That is fine: neither will you, for a while.

474 ratings averaging 4.5 is the largest verified sample of any beginner frame we found on Amazon UK, and sample size is the one thing a shop’s “best seller” badge never tells you. The Extreme Evo sits slightly firmer than the Radical and rewards a fuller swing, which suits players coming from tennis or squash.

398 ratings at 4.6. The Evo Speed is the one frame here that leans towards a teardrop feel, with slightly more mass towards the head. That makes it a little less forgiving than the Radical and a little more capable once your contact point stops moving around. Buy it if you already know you want to attack.

5. Adidas Drive 3.4 — cheapest brand-name frame, £44.90
4.7 across 64 ratings, and the lowest price on this page from a manufacturer that also supplies the professional tour. The Drive is Adidas’s entry line and it behaves like one: round, soft, undemanding, and noticeably less stable than the Head frames when the ball comes off the back glass hard. 6. Dunlop Lumina — £51.95
217 ratings at 4.4, a graphite frame with a Pro EVA core at 365 g. That is the heavy end of what we would put in a beginner’s hand, and it is deliberate: players arriving from tennis are used to mass and often find 350 g frames flimsy. If you have never held a racket of any kind, pick something lighter.

7. Wilson Optix V1 — £70.00
A fibreglass face over soft foam, which is about as gentle as a padel racket gets, with 109 ratings at 4.3. Fibreglass is softer and less durable than carbon: it feels better in month one and wears faster by month twelve. That is the honest trade, and for a beginner it is usually the right one.

8. Head Zephyr UL — lightest, £87.89
4.8 across 58 ratings and the lightest frame here. “UL” is ultralight, and it exists for two groups: juniors, and adults whose elbow or shoulder objects to a 365 g racket. If you have had tennis elbow, start here and accept that you will lose a little stability off the glass.

What not to buy as a beginner
- Two-racket starter sets under £40. The cheapest one in our data averages 2.5 out of 5 across 71 ratings. That is not a bargain, it is a reason people quit the sport.
- Diamond-shaped frames. The sweet spot sits high on the face and is small. Every review of the Bullpadel Vertex 04, our highest-graded racket at 9.0, says the same thing: it is superb and it is not a first racket.
- Anything above £150. A frame like the Babolat Technical Viper produces the highest power figure we have recorded and punishes off-centre contact severely. Buy it when your contact point stops moving.
- Unbranded rackets with fewer than 20 ratings. Not because they are all bad, but because you cannot tell. Sample size is the whole point.
When to upgrade
If you want a lighter frame than anything here, the 350-gram end of the market is mostly sold under a women’s label — what that actually changes, and when to ignore it, is in best women’s padel rackets.
The honest signal to upgrade is not time, it is contact. When you can hit the middle of the face on a back-glass rally three times out of four, a more demanding frame starts giving you something back. That is usually six to twelve months of playing twice a week. Round. It has the largest sweet spot of the three shapes and the lowest balance, which is what forgives mishits and keeps the racket manoeuvrable at the net.
What weight padel racket should a beginner use?
350 to 365 grams. Lighter than 350 g and the racket gets pushed around by balls off the glass; heavier than 365 g and it is slow to the volley and harder on the elbow.
Is an expensive padel racket worth it for a beginner?
No. Premium frames are stiffer, more head-heavy and have smaller sweet spots. They reward a repeatable contact point, which is exactly what a beginner does not have yet.
Do beginner padel rackets come with a cover?
Most in this price band do. It matters less than it sounds — a cover protects against scuffs in a bag, not against the frame damage that comes from hitting the glass.
