Carbon Fibre Padel Rackets: 3K, 12K, 18K Explained

The K number counts filaments in each thread of the weave: 3K is 3,000, 18K is 18,000. It describes the fabric on the face, not the quality of the racket — and the industry does not even agree on which direction it changes the feel.

What the K number is

Carbon fibre arrives as thread, and each thread is a bundle of filaments. “12K” means 12,000 filaments twisted into every thread of the cloth that is laid over the racket’s core.

The honest bit that nobody prints. Read four retailer guides on 3K versus 18K and you will get two opposite answers. Two of the sites ranking for this search say a higher K is stiffer; two say a higher K is softer with more ball exit. They cannot all be right, and the reason they disagree is that the weave is not the only variable — the number of carbon layers, the resin, the core density and the frame geometry all change stiffness more than the thread count does. The K number tells you what the cloth looks like. It does not reliably tell you how the racket plays.

The most-published spec is close to the least informative. That is not an accident: it is the one that photographs well.

Carbon versus fibreglass

This is the material decision that genuinely matters, and it is the one to make first.

Fibreglass is the better first racket and carbon is the better tenth. Fibreglass feels better in month one and is worn out by month twelve; carbon is unforgiving until your technique settles and then lasts.

The counterexample in our own database

If more carbon meant a better racket, the ranking would follow the price. It does not.

The Nox Equation is the cheapest frame we have graded and scores 8.3 — and among the ten scored rackets it is one of the two most comfortable, precisely because it is soft rather than stiff. Meanwhile the Babolat Technical Viper, a premium carbon frame, records the highest power figure in the database at 97 and one of the lowest forgiveness figures at 73. Both numbers are correct and both are the consequence of stiffness.

What about aluminised and hybrid faces?

Some premium frames use an aluminised carbon — carbon cloth with a thin metallic layer — sold on roughness for spin. It is real: a rougher face does bite the ball slightly more. It is also the smallest effect on this page, and it wears off. The Nox AT10 Genius uses an 18K aluminised carbon and scores 86 for control; the Adidas Metalbone Ctrl, with a 16K aluminised face, scores 93 — the highest control figure we have recorded. What does 12K mean on a padel racket?

That each thread of the carbon cloth on the face contains 12,000 filaments. It describes the weave, not the quality of the racket, and it is a weaker predictor of how a frame plays than the core, the number of layers or the balance.

Is 18K carbon better than 3K?

Not better, different — and the industry does not describe the difference consistently. Some retailers say a higher K is stiffer, others say softer. Judge a racket by its core and its face material, not by the weave grade.

Is a carbon padel racket worth it for a beginner?

Usually not. Carbon is stiffer and transmits more shock to the arm, and it punishes off-centre contact — which a beginner produces constantly. A fibreglass face with a soft EVA core is the better first racket.

What is the difference between carbon and fibreglass padel rackets?

Stiffness. Carbon is hard, fast and durable; fibreglass flexes, feels softer, is kinder to the elbow and wears out sooner. Fibreglass is the better first racket and carbon the better long-term one.

Does carbon fibre make a padel racket more powerful?

On a clean strike, yes. Off centre, it does the opposite — a stiff face has a smaller effective sweet spot, so a mishit loses more than it gains.
