There is no dress code at British club level. Wear the sports clothing you already own. The one item that genuinely matters is the shoes, and it matters for safety rather than performance.
Why this page reads differently. Every other result for this search is published by somebody who sells clothing. We do not, so we can start with the honest answer: you almost certainly do not need to buy anything above your ankles.
The one thing that matters
Court shoes with a herringbone or clay sole. Padel is played on artificial turf dressed with sand, and the movement is lateral — push off sideways, stop, turn, push back. Running shoes have a smooth sole and no lateral support, and on that surface the result is rolled ankles.
From about £42 in Britain. The shortlist, with what to look for in a sole, is in best padel shoes.
Everything else on this page is optional. If you turn up in a cotton t-shirt and gym shorts you will play a perfectly good game of padel. The rest is comfort, and in a British winter it is worth getting right.
What to wear, by conditions
| Conditions | Wear | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor, any season | Normal sports clothing. Non-marking soles. | Halls are warm and still. Nothing else is needed. |
| Outdoor, spring and summer | Technical t-shirt or polo, shorts or a skort, cap. | Glass walls do not block UV — you will burn on a bright day without noticing. |
| Outdoor, autumn | Long sleeve base layer plus a t-shirt. A wind layer between games. | You cool down fast during changeovers. |
| Outdoor, British winter | Base layer, mid layer, thin wind shell you can play in. Long tights are fine. | Cold muscles and lateral movement are how calves and Achilles get injured. |
| Rain that has just stopped | Nothing changes — check the surface, not your kit. | Damp sanded turf is slippery. That is a court decision, not a clothing one. |
Fabric: the one genuine technical point
Avoid cotton for anything you play in. It absorbs sweat, holds it and gets heavy and cold — which in a British October is more than a comfort issue, because you spend ninety seconds standing still between games.
Polyester and polyester-elastane blends move moisture away and dry between points. That is the whole of the fabric argument, and it is the same argument as for any other sport. You do not need padel-branded fabric; you need synthetic fabric.
Tops, bottoms and the fit that actually helps
| Item | What works |
|---|---|
| Top | Neither tight nor loose. A tight top restricts the overhead; a loose one catches on your own racket at the net, which happens more than you would think. |
| Shorts | With pockets, and deep ones. You carry a second ball in your pocket for the serve — this is the single most useful clothing feature in padel and almost nobody mentions it. |
| Skort | Same point: the built-in shorts need a ball pocket. |
| Socks | Thick sports socks. Padel shoes are firm and the lateral push-off blisters heels. Any brand. |
| Cap or visor | Outdoors, useful. Low sun through a glass wall is genuinely blinding. |
What not to buy
- Padel-specific socks. Any thick sports sock does the same job for a third of the price.
- Compression sleeves, for a beginner. They are a recovery aid for people playing four times a week, not a fix for a sore arm in month one. If your arm hurts, the cause is almost always grip pressure or a stiff racket — see padel racket grip size.
- A second set of shoes for indoor. British indoor padel uses the same sanded turf as outdoor. There is no indoor surface to buy for — the detail is in indoor vs outdoor padel.
- Anything before your third session. You do not yet know whether you will keep playing. The sequence that avoids wasted money is in how to get started playing padel.
Is there a dress code anywhere?
At British club level, no. Some venues ask for non-marking soles indoors, which any court shoe satisfies. A handful of private members’ clubs apply a general sports dress standard inherited from tennis — plain, sports-appropriate, no denim — and will say so when you book.
Competition is different: LTA-sanctioned events and tournaments can specify sports clothing and, at higher levels, matching kit for a pair. If you are entering something, check the entry conditions rather than assuming.
What the professionals wear, and why it does not apply
Tour players wear fitted technical kit for two reasons: sponsorship, and playing five matches in four days in Spanish heat. Neither is your situation on a Tuesday evening in Manchester.
The one thing worth copying is the layering. Watch any professional between games and they put a layer on immediately — because cooling down and then moving laterally at speed is how muscles tear. That habit costs nothing and is worth more than the kit.

Frequently asked questions
What should I wear to play padel?
Ordinary sports clothing and court shoes with a herringbone or clay sole. There is no dress code at British club level, and the shoes are the only item that genuinely matters.
Is there a dress code for padel?
Not at club level in Britain. Some venues require non-marking soles indoors, and a few private clubs apply a general sports dress standard. Tournaments may specify their own conditions.
Can you wear normal trainers for padel?
Not running trainers. They have smooth soles and no lateral support, and on sanded artificial turf that combination is the most common cause of a rolled ankle in the sport.
What do you wear to play padel in winter?
A base layer, a mid layer and a thin wind shell you can play in, plus long tights if you prefer. The important part is putting a layer on between games — cold muscles and lateral movement are how injuries happen.
Do you need padel-specific clothing?
No. Any synthetic sports clothing works. What you want is polyester rather than cotton, and shorts with a pocket deep enough to hold a second ball.
Should you wear a cap for padel?
Outdoors, yes. Glass walls do not block UV and low sun through them is genuinely blinding on an overhead.
